Jayalalithaa calls for an alliance with CPI

CPI leader A B Bardhan is likely to meet AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Wednesday. The meeting will be held to discuss the possibility of an alliance between the two parties ahead of the general elections. Jayalalitha had earlier declared that she was open for an alliance with the left. Bardhan will meet her along with other leaders of the Left front.

Veterinarians fail to save rescued tiger cub

One of the two tiger cubs rescued from Chandrapur forest by veterinarians died despite best efforts by the doctors. In a first of its kind operation in India, the tiger cub underwent a rare blood transfusion; however, the cub didn't survive. Vets at Nagpur zoo performed an operation after the 7-month-old cub was found battered by villagers.

Obama's warcry 'Go for al-Qaeda' after taking over

US president-elect Barack Obama has Al-Qaeda in his sights. Man fined for gratifying acts on a plane

A man has been fined for exposing himself and masturbating in front of a woman on a Darwin-bound flight. Lucas Steven Knudson argued he was "just adjusting himself" because his jeans were too tight, a Darwin court heard yesterday, the Northern Territory News reports. The Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday was told Knudson, 32, had just landed on board Virgin Blue flight DJ449 from Brisbane when he was escorted off the plane by Australian Federal Police after masturbating for "maybe four minutes" underneath his tray table in view of mother-of-two Simone Holt.

FM asks auto firms, airlines to cut prices

The world may be on the brink of a great depression, but Finance Minister P Chidambaram has infused some hope in the India story. Speaking at the Indian Summit of the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, Chidambaram said India would record a satisfactory growth this fiscal and expressed hope the economy will bounce back. He also asked auto firms and airlines to cut prices.

Most wanted: Lt Col linked to more blasts

Lt Col Srikant Prasad Purohit, the Army officer under arrest for the Malegaon explosion, has emerged as a suspect in at least two more blast cases. Purohit is alleged to have trained the people and supplied explosives for the Malegaon blast. The CBI and the Haryana Police want to question him too. The Sangh Parivar alleges the charges against Purohit are baseless and claims that the UPA Government is dishonouring soldiers and Hindu seers.
